ABOUT OUR MOTHER LEWIS

Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis is an educated visionary and proven leader of women. She is a native of Los Angeles, California, and a lifelong member of the Church of God in Christ.

From a very young age, Mother Lewis developed a high interest in the things of God and a deep admiration for the teachings and operations of the Church of God in Christ. As a child and teenager, she enthusiastically attended Sunday School and cheerfully participated in other church activities with her parents, Pastor Richard and Mother Sue McCoo.

In June 1962, Mother Lewis married Bishop James Arthur Lewis Sr. They became the very proud parents of James Jr. and Jeffrey Lewis. In February 1970, Mother Lewis and Bishop Lewis co-founded the New Antioch Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles, CA in the living room of their home with five other adults as members. From its inception, Mother and Bishop Lewis committed themselves to the mission of "Serving the Community through Ministry."

Mother Lewis faithfully and whole-heartedly served in her roles at New Antioch alongside her husband while simultaneously leading in multiple roles in the Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles, CA. In 1988, she was selected by Bishop Charles E. Blake to serve as his Jurisdictional (State) Supervisor of Southern California First. Mother Lewis had the honor of being appointed and installed by the fourth General Supervisor of Women, Dr. Mattie McGlothen during the 1988 National Holy Convocation of the Church of God in Christ. Without hesitation, Mother Lewis embraced her assignment with great respect and dignity and implemented a myriad of programs in the Jurisdictional Department of Women. Notably, in 2002, she led the women into the completion of the Hale Morris Lewis Senior Complex, the Los Angeles-based 4.7 million dollar 41-unit complex named after the three preceding Jurisdictional Supervisors of Women in California.

In 2006, Mother Lewis, alongside Bishop Lewis retired from their positions as leaders of New Antioch Church of God in Christ. However, they continued to serve as models and teachers of the church and community and continued their involvement in church activities together. Mother Lewis served as a devoted wife and key supporter of Bishop Lewis for 57 years until his demise in September 2019.

Throughout her tenure as Jurisdictional Supervisor of Women, Mother Lewis garnered the attention of leading women of the Church of God in Christ on an international level. She grew to serve on the Department of Women Advisory Board, and the Department of Women Executive Board. She was later assigned as the International Marshal, a ranking appointee responsible for ensuring the events of the COGIC International Women's Department are carried out in an orderly manner. Mother Lewis also served as the Women’s Editor of the "Whole Truth" newspaper, the historical printed publication of the Church of God in Christ founded in the late 1890s by Bishop Charles Harrison Mason. In 2013, Mother Lewis was promoted to serve as the Assistant Supervisor to Mother Willie Mae Rivers, the sixth General Supervisor of Women.

In 2017, Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis was appointed as the seventh General Supervisor of Women of the Church of God in Christ. Since her leadership, Mother Lewis has established the COGIC Women's Book Club, Literacy Mentoring Programs for Young Women, Jurisdictional Supervisors' Training Academy and so much more. Currently, Mother Lewis serves as the President and CEO of the 501c(3) Southern California COGIC Economic Development Corporation and the 501c(3) Barbara McCoo Lewis Ministry, which partners with other entities to enhance the quality of life for the underserved in urban America.

Mother Lewis earned an Associate of Arts degree in Journalism from West Los Angeles Community College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from California State University at Los Angeles. She also received a Master of Arts degree and an honorary Doctorate degree in Theology from the Southern California School of Ministry.

Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis is the author of the 'Christian Woman’s Guide to Church Protocol & Saintly Decorum.' She is a lover of God and a true servant of God's people.
